Big-hearted city brokers have been putting their backs into a major effort to realize the dreams of families struggling to survive.
They’ve been volunteering, as part of the Brokers Building initiative, to work on the construction of homes on Brooklyn’s Atlantic Avenue for Habitat for Humanity.
Broker’s Build is an organization made up of top New York city real estate agents who dedicate their time to raising funds for Habitat for Humanity, the international charity dedicated to eliminating housing poverty and homelessness.
Several Halstead agents were on hand to support and help the organization, including Brian Lewis, executive vice president of the Westside office, and Alan Pfeifer senior vice president of the Village office.
Brokers Build has set a goal to raise $1 million dollars towards habitat-NYC’s Atlantic Avenue complex. Located in Ocean Hill-Brownsville, Brooklyn, the team has raised $125,000 to date.
It aims to recruit 1,000 colleagues to raise $1,000 each towards affordable homes in order to reach the million dollar goal.
Mara Flash Blum, chair of the Brokers Build Advisory Committee and a senior vice president at Sotheby’s International Realty, said, “Brokers understand better than anyone how affordable homes can help a community and improve the lives of New York City families.”
The Habitat-NYC project, at 1870 Easter Parkway, is comprised of three, four story buildings with 41 homes total, making it Habitat-NYC’s largest project to date.
The project is being constructed with energy-efficient and environmentally friendly materials and designed to qualify for a LEED rating, which will save homeowners 30% or more on their energy bills.
“With the help and support of Brokers Build and Habitat-NYC, instead of paying my rent, I will be paying my mortgage,” said Zerika Griffith, a future owner of one of the 41 homes, who spend her weekends building side-by-side with volunteers at the project construction site.
