The 31st annual Darien Road Race will be held Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1, at Pear Tree Point Beach. The race route, which stretches along scenic waterfront roads, includes two wheel-measured events, a 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) and a 1.5 mile fun run called “The Loop.”
Following the race, awards will be presented to the runners with the fastest finish times. Other awards include the Jim Fixx Award, which goes to the individual who collects the most in contributions to the beneficiaries of the race.
The Darien Road Race benefits the Community Fund of Darien, as well the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital and the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.
Atria Darien Awards, presented by the town’s independent and assisted living residence, are given to the oldest and youngest runners with the best finish times in the 10-K or “The Loop” events.
At the “Finish Line,” race sponsors and local organizations will set-up a gallery of booths where everyone, especially kids, can enjoy food and entertainment, games and win prizes while they wait to hear the race results.
Halstead Property is serving as the lead sponsor of the race, and several Halstead executives and agents will participate in the event.
“Halstead Property has a long history of giving back to the community,” said Charlotte Felt, executive director of sales for the Darien and Rowayton offices.
“Each year the Darien Road Race is such an exciting event in our community, and we are so proud to be a part of it. We feel that it is incredible important to sponsor local causes that directly benefit our neighbors.”
Other sponsors are Atria Darien, Equinox Fitness, as well as other sponsors including BMW of Darien; David Osherow; Heights Pizza; David Lerner Associates; Moore Center for Rehabilitation; Tibbett’s, Keating & Butler, Attorneys-at-Law; TD Wealth Management; Christine Hamilton-Hall; The Little Gym; Lucy Activewear; Merrill Lynch and Methodist Family Center Preschool.
The Darien Boat Club will provide a tent and use of its beachfront property, while the Darien Lions Club is providing refreshments and food. The Darien Times and 96.7 the COAST are the official media sponsors for the race.
Race day check-in and registration is from 10:30 to 12:30 at Pear Tree Point Beach. Cash, credit cards or personal checks may be made payable to Darien Road Race.
Parking at the beach will be limited, but access to the beach and road will be closed at 12:30 or when the lot is full. Look for off-site parking, or carpool.
Registration for the Darien Road Race is $25 in advance and $30 on race day. Runners may pre-register at active.org or DarienRoadRace.org.
Runners may also pre-register the day before the race on Sept. 18, at the Community Fund of Darien, 701 Post Road.
In addition, Darien Police are reminding motorists and residents to expect short-term delays and detours along the race route.
The race, hosting approximately 500 participants, will start at Pear Tree Point Beach and proceed to Long Neck Point Road, Ring’s End Road, Harbor Road, eastbound on the Post Road, Old King’s Highway South, Andrews Drive, Red Coat Pass, Tory Hole Road, Sunswyck Road, Goodwives River Road, and back to Pear Tree Point Beach.
