The race will once again be supporting the Community Fund of Darien, the Bennett Cancer Center at Stamford Hospital, and the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.

The Community Fund

The Community Fund of Darien is a volunteer-driven not-for-profit that addresses health and human services needs in Darien, Norwalk and Stamford by offering assessment, advice, consultation and annual grant funding. After a thorough allocation review process involving more than 50 town volunteers, over $640,000 will be distributed in grants to agencies in 2010-11. Another $75,000 is supporting our community through small grants, the Touch a Life Fund and initiatives such as Aging In Place in Darien and Thriving Youth: Connecting Community.

The mission of Aging In Place is to help seniors live independently, comfortably and with dignity in their homes as long as possible. Thriving Youth is a town-wide collaboration involving all sectors of our community working to build developmental assets through meaningful experiences, opportunities, skills and relationships that benefit all our children. Working with Darien’s Department of Social Services, the “Touch of Life” fund helps Darien residents who are experiencing one-time emergencies.

“The Community Fund of Darien is grateful to the Darien Road Race for its generous support,” said Kiki Karpen, executive director, “This event truly represents what The Community Fund is all about — bringing people together to improve lives. It’s a celebration of community spirit in our wonderful town.”

Bennett Cancer Center

The Bennett Cancer Center in Stamford provides compassionate, patient centered care ranging from cancer diagnosis through treatment and post-treatment care. The center has a multidisciplinary team of board-certified physicians, oncology and radiation specialists who offer advanced surgical, medical and leading-edge technological services in a warm caring environment. The center is recognized as a major research center with more than two dozen trials ongoing at any given time. The Bennett Center is dedicated to prevention and early detection demonstrated through its Cancer Genetics Program, Breast Cancer Awareness Program, Familial Colorectal Cancer Registry and numerous community outreach programs.

“Many of the supportive programs and services offered at no charge to our patients are made possible through generous donations to the Center,” said Elizabeth Manfredo, director of Cancer Services at Stamford Hospital.

Whittingham Cancer Center

The Whittingham Cancer Center in Norwalk offers a full spectrum of services from cancer prevention and screenings to diagnosis and treatment. The center also offers numerous clinical research protocols that enable patients to participate in emerging therapies.

The center’s focus is continually responding to the changing needs of healthcare and patients. Its goal, as Southwestern Connecticut’s premier community cancer center, is to offer the best of cancer care in a warm and caring environment.

The Whittingham Cancer Center, recipient of the highest rating for a Community Hospital Comprehensive Cancer program by the American College of Surgeon’s Commission on Cancer, has been accredited for over 30 years with a demonstrated level of compliance which exceeds standards for a full scope of cancer programs.

“The proceeds from the Darien Road Race will play a critical role in helping us achieve this level of success for extraordinary patient care.” said Suzanne R. Schintzius, CPA and annual giving manager.

The race

The Darien Road Race includes two wheel-measured events, a 10-kilometer race (6.2 miles) and a 1.5-mile fun run called “The Loop.” Both events, which begin at 1, will start and finish at Pear Tree Point Beach in Darien. Several race sponsors and other local organizations will set up a gallery of booths where everyone, especially kids, can enjoy games and win prizes while they wait to hear the race results.

The Darien Road Race has raised more than $835,000 in its three decades of history. This year, the race is being made possible by the generous financial contributions of Halstead Property, Atria Darien and Equinox Fitness, as well as other sponsors including, BMW of Darien; David Osherow; Heights Pizza; David Lerner Associates; the Moore Center for Rehabilitation; Tibbett’s Keating & Butler Attorneys-at-Law; TD Wealth Management; Christine Hamilton-Hall; The Little Gym; Lucy Activewear; Merrill Lynch; and Methodist Center Family Preschool.

The Darien Boat Club will provide a tent and use of its beachfront property, while the Darien Lions Club is providing refreshments and food. The Darien Times is the official media sponsor for the race. As a grand prize for the top individual fund-raiser, BMW of Darien is contributing a 24-speed, lightweight aluminum BMW bicycle.
