An "angry man" once lived in this 1894 townhouse. But not just any irate fellow. This was the home of George Voskovec, who played juror No. 11- a European watchmaker- in Signey Lumet's 12 Angry Men. Apparently, he was a defender of justice many years before that role, too. According to his 1981 Times obituary, Voskovec was part of a duo renowned in Czechoslovakia for their "scathing satifical reviews and plays, aimed at Hitler and Nazism." He fled his country in 1939 for America, where he wound up acting in dozens of movies, including The Iron Mistress and Butterfield 8. He bought the massive townhouse around 1968 and lived in it until the early eighties, during which time he appeared in major stage productions of The Cherry Orchard, Agamemnon, and The Penny Wars. The house is now in contract through a network of brokers at Corcoran, Brown Harris Stevens and Halstead.
